What Experiencias Chiapas are about
Now Iguana Hostel extends its services to Experiencias Chiapas.
Our main offer is unconventional and tailor-made tours in Chiapas to local celebrations and indigenous festivals in small, private groups.
The experience is more than visual: it becomes unforgettable due to Rudy's explanations about the roots of the customs and the legends that you will hear. Thanks to that, you will see it from another perspective. There's a lot of history and faith behind costumes, masks and colours! These experiences are unique and available on only certain dates through the year. Available in Spanish and English.
Meet Rudy, your local expert
I grew up with the traditions and legends of indigenous and mestizo peoples of Chiapas, where I come from and learned them from my grandparents, parents. Later, during my university career in Politics and Social Studies, I delved into several historical and social aspects. I also lived a historical moment in my city, witnessing the armed revolution of the EZLN (Zapatistas). My passion for traditions and legends is stronger every day and I enjoy sharing it with visitors toChiapas, which I have been doing over 10 years receiving very positive feedback.
Customs and culture of Indigenous Villages
All tour agents offer a tour to San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan, the most visited indigenous villages about 30 minutes from San Cristobal. If you rather go on a private excursion in small groups, Experiencias Chiapas is for you. Rudy will share stories and solid information. You will visit a local family in Zinacantan, where you will be invited to make your own tortilla. At the end of our tour, will get to the cementery at the altitue of 2,700 meters to enjoy a stunning view of the highlands. Our Iguana's guests get 50% discount so take this opportunity!
Leaving every Wednesday and Friday at 10 am from Iguana Hostel. General public $500/person, 2 more people $400.
