A few miles east of Tuxtla Gutierrez is the spectacular Cañon Sumidero, created by the mighty Rio Grijalva which runs northwards through it.
Cañon Sumidero can be toured by boat on the river that runs through it, or from above, by the beautiful lookouts and trails.
The 2-3 hour round trip on the boat will take you on a spectacular journey through the canyon, with some of the walls towering 2,500 feet (760 m) above you. Your boat may take you on a tour past one or two caves. The wildlife you will see is equally as spectacular which includes crocodiles and spider monkeys.
If you want to get a bird’s-eye view of the canyon, travel by car to ‘miradores’, where there are 6 viewing points located in the national park. A new Ecological Park has been opened inside the canyon. The only way to get to the park is by boat.
The most common embarkation point is at Chiapa de Corzo, a 40-minutes drive from Tuxtla Gutierrez.
